Slip-and-fall case against Shop 'N Save settles

Hylla

A trial scheduled to start next week was settled this week.

Madison County Circuit Judge David Hylla signed an order approving the settlement of the lawsuit against Shop 'N Save filed by a woman who slipped and fell in the Edwardsville grocery store.

Julie Varble sued in 2011 over an alleged incident in June 2007.

Varble says she was shopping at the Troy Road store when she stepped onto a soda pallet so she could reach a couple of cases of soda. As she stepped off the pallet, Varble claims she tripped over another case of soda stacked beside the display.

Varble says the case she tripped over was lying on the floor in the aisle, and because she was carrying other cases of soda, she was unable to see it.

Varble accused Shop 'N Save Warehouse Foods of negligence and sought at least $50,000 in damages for medical costs and court fees.

Attorney Peter J. Maag of Wood River represented Varble.
