Cougar Drive accident on trial this week in Madison County

A trial is starting this week in Madison County Circuit Judge David Hylla's courtroom over a 2009 rear-end accident on the campus of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville.

Katrina Hughes accuses Jennifer Trgovich of negligence in a lawsuit filed Jan. 14 in Madison County Circuit Court. Hughes says Trgovich is to blame for the crash that happened at 5:55 a.m. Jan. 26.

According to the complaint, Hughes was in a Dodge Caliber on Cougar Lake Drive. She says she was stopped waiting to turn onto East University Drive when Trgovich allegedly ran her Jeep Wrangler into the back of the Caliber.

Hughes says she received multiple injuries that required expensive medical treatment and have caused pain, mental. She says she has also lost wages because she has been forced to work less since the crash.

Hughes is asking for more than $50,000 in damages.

The defense denies the allegations.

Jury selection started Monday. The trial is expected to last two to three days.

Richard G. Reed of Reed and Bruhn P.C. in Belleville is representing Hughes.

Martin K. Morrissey of Reed, Armstrong, Gorman, Mudge & Morrissey represent the defense.
