Puddle of water leads to woman's personal injury claim

A woman has filed suit against the cleaning company that she claims left a puddle of water on the floor, causing her to fall and to sustain back injuries.

Shilesta Tate claims she was working for Beverly Farm Foundation on April 29, 2010, when she encountered a puddle of soap and water in the hallway outside of a maintenance closet, causing her to slip and fall.

In addition to her back injuries, Tate experienced great pain and suffering, incurred medical costs and lost money from her inability to engage in her normal occupation, according to the complaint filed March 22 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Tate blames defendant Healthcare Services Group for causing her fall. Beverly Farm had hired HSG to clean its premises, but the cleaning company negligently allowed the liquid to spill in the hallway, failed to remove the fluid from the floor and failed to warn of the slip hazard, the suit states.

Matthew R. Chapman of Becker, Schroader and Chapman in Granite City will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-358.
