Accident on Route 3 exit ramp leads to suit

Winterscheidt

A woman claims she suffered severe injuries after a driver struck the vehicle in which she rode.

Corinna L. Holaus filed a lawsuit March 7 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against the estate of Ruth M. Cort.

In her complaint, Holaus alleges she rode in a 2008 Chevrolet HHR traveling east on Palmer Road toward an exit ramp for vehicles entering Palmer Road from Illinois Route 3. Suddenly, Cort, who drove a 1997 Pontiac Grand Am north on Illinois Route 3, attempted to take the exit ramp that intersected with Palmer Road when she struck the vehicle in which Holaus rode, according to the complaint.

In addition to her injuries, Holaus was prevented from attending to her usual duties and incurred extensive medical costs, the suit states.

She blames Cort for causing the collision, saying she negligently drove too fast, failed to maintain control of her vehicle, failed to stop to oncoming traffic, allowed her vehicle to travel into oncoming traffic and failed to provide herself with sufficient stopping time.

Since the accident, Cort has died, and Holaus named her estate as a defendant.

Holaus seeks a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs.

John Winterscheidt of Armbruster, Dripps, Winterscheidt and Blotevogel in Alton will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 12-L-125.
