Wood River Wal-Mart sued over cart corral trip

A Madison County woman is suing a Wood River Wal-Mart after she allegedly tripped over a cart corral in the store's parking lot.

Sandy McCartney and her husband, Ronald, filed the injury claim Jan. 12 in Madison County Circuit Court against Wal-Mart Stores Inc.

Sandy McCartney says she was preparing to shop at the Wood River store in August 2011 when she tried to get a cart from the outdoor cart corral. McCartney says that is when her foot got caught on a loose piece of metal on the cart rack's threshold.

McCartney says the loose threshould caused her to trip and fall to the ground. The suit does not list any specific injuries but says they caused the woman "serious and permanent" harm and a diminished quality of life.

McCartney accuses Wal-Mart of negligence. Her husband is also suing for loss of consortium. They are asking for more than $65,000 in damages to compensate for medical expenses and costs associated with the lawsuit.
