City of East St. Louis sued again over sidewalk injury

A woman is asking the City of East St. Louis to pay more than $50,000 after she was allegedly hurt while walking on a city sidewalk.

Karen Borders filed a lawsuit Dec. 12 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against the City of East St. Louis.

According to the complaint, Borders was walking west on a sidewalk along State Street in September. Near the intersection with 38th Street, Borders claims the sidewalk makes an abrupt four-inch drop. Unaware of the drop, Borers says she fell over the uneven surface, breaking her ankle and seriously injuring her knee.

Borders accuses the City of East St. Louis of negligence for allowing the drop in the sidewalk and for allegedly failing to alert pedestrians to the uneven surface. She is asking for more than $50,000 in damages for medical expenses and court costs.

Attorney John H. Hustava of Collinsville is representing Borders.
