VIP Manor named in suit over resident's care

The family of a deceased Madison County man says a Wood River nursing home is to blame for his death.

Carl H. Woodward, as special administrator of the Estate of Thomas D. Woodward, filed a lawsuit Nov. 7 in Madison County Circuit Court against SA-Enc VIP Manor LLC, doing business as VIP Manor.

Carl Woodward says Thomas Woodward was a resident of VIP Manor on Edwardsville Road. In March 2010, he says the 52-year-old was taken to Saint Anthony Hospital with severe bedsores, low blood pressure and an infection.

At the hospital, Woodward was also allegedly diagnosed with a bone infection in his lower spine. During treatment for the bone infection, Carl Woodward says Thomas Woodward developed a colitis, an infection of the colon caused by an overgrowth of bacteria. Thomas Woodward died in April 2010.

Carl Woodward accuses VIP Manor of negligence and of violating Illinois' Nursing Home Care Act for allegedly failing to provide proper care to Thomas Woodward. He also accuses the facility of wrongful death. Woodward is asking for more than $150,000 in damages for medical expenses and court costs.

Attorney Eva E. Golabek of Chicago is representing Woodward.
