Madison County to offer free legal advice on second and fourth Tuesdays

The Madison County legal community will be offering free legal advice on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month in the law library at the Madison County Courthouse.

Appointments, set for 30 minutes, will be scheduled on family law issues from 9 a.m.-noon. General civil issues will be heard from 1-4 p.m. Appointments must be made in advance.

Law Librarian Betsy Mahoney is taking appointments for the next sessions, Nov. 22 and Dec. 13.

The sessions are intended to serve low-income Madison County residents who are seeking to represent themselves in court or who have legal questions.

Madison County Bar Associations's Pro Bono Committee is also looking for attorneys who are interested in volunteering for one or two hours, said Joan Spiegel, managing attorney of Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation.

"Because of the way the clinics are organized, this is an excellent opportunity for lawyers who have always wanted to do pro bono work but who have struggled to find time to volunteer," Spiegel said.

For more information, call Betsy Mahoney at (618) 296-5921 or e-mail bemahoney@co.madison.il.us to make an appointment, volunteer or give advice.
