Child suffered brain damage during delivery, med mal suit claims

Brown

A St. Clair County couple accuses Memorial Hospital and its staff of causing their daughter to be born with brain damage.

Nathaniel and Lisa Hufker, individually and on behalf of their daughter, filed a lawsuit Oct. 4 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Protestant Memorial Medical Center Inc., doing business as Memorial Hospital and Dr. Emily B. Boyd. Grace Women's Healthcare LLC, Ferdinand J. Mueller Ltd., Dr. Paul Sander, Anesthesia Associates of Belleville Ltd. and Saint Louis University are also named as defendants.

The couple says Lisa Hufker was admitted to Memorial Hospital to deliver her baby in April 2009. During delivery the Hufkers claim the doctors and staff failed to recognize their baby was in distress, failed to properly intubate and resuscitate the child. They say the labor and delivery room staff didn't call for a neonatologist in time to help the baby during delivery.

The Hufkers say the lack of proper care and intervention cause their daughter to be born with brain and nerve damage. They say she is now severely disabled. .

The Hufkers accuse the defendants of negligence and, by way of Illinois' Family Expense Act, contend they are entitled to more than $600,000 in damages for medical expenses and court costs.

The couple is represented by attorney Terry N. Brown of Belleville. They ask for a jury trial.
