Gateway Regional and Gateway Surgical sued over man's death

The family of a Madison County man who allegedly died after a hernia operation says his doctor is to blame for the death.

Melissa Mulligan, on behalf of the estate of Casey Mulligan, filed a lawsuit July 7 in Madison County Circuit Court against Dr. Wesley Harris, Gateway Regional Medical Center and Gateway Surgical & Vein Center.

Court records show Mulligan was admitted to Gateway Regional Medical Center in July 2010 for a hernia diagnosed by Dr. Harris. During the surgery, Dr. Harris allegedly inserted a suture through Mulligan's bowel. Days later, Mulligan's sister says he developed an infection and was readmitted to Gateway Medical Center where he died in August 2010.

An autopsy allegedly revealed Mulligan died from his infection as well as a clogging of his bowel caused by the surgery.

The family accuses Dr. Harris, Gateway Medical Center and Gateway Surgical & Vein of malpractice and is suing for the wrongful death of Casey Mulligan. They are asking for more than $300,000 in damages, plus court costs.

Attorneys Amy Collignon Gunn and Anne Brockland of St. Louis represent the Mulligan family. They ask for a jury trial.
