Route 111 accident causes injuries, suit claims

Two women claim they suffered neck, shoulder and back injuries after a driver failed to stop at a stop sign.

Pamela and Jennifer Baine filed a lawsuit May 5 in Madison County Circuit Court against Shawna Stewart.

The Baines claim Pamela Baine drove south on Illinois Route 111 near its intersection with Acton Street in Wood River on May 11, 2009, when Stewart, who drove east on Acton Street, failed to stop and collided with the vehicle in which the women rode. At the time of the collision, Jennifer Baine rode in the vehicle with Pamela Baine, according to the complaint.

In addition to their injuries, the women suffered great pain, mental anguish and disability and became unable to attend to their normal duties, according to the complaint.

They blame Stewart for causing the collision, saying she negligently failed to stop at the stop line before entering the intersection, failed to yield the right-of-way and failed to reduce her speed to avoid a collision. In addition, Stewart negligently failed to keep a proper lookout, the suit states.

In their complaint, the Baines seek a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs.

J. Robert Edmonds of Mormino, Velloff, Edmonds and Snider in Alton will be representing them.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 11-L-429.
