Shenanigans sued over beer bottle injury

A man has filed suit against the bar and the patron who he claims attacked him with a beer bottle.

Paul David Antonio Buxton claims he was at defendant Shenanigans Bar and Restaurant on May 28, 2010, when defendant Michael Meier attacked him with a beer bottle and Meier's knee.

The attack occurred after Meier became intoxicated at the bar, according to the complaint filed May 27 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Because of the assault, Buxton sustained severe and permanent injuries, experienced great physical pain and anguish and incurred medical costs, the suit states.

Buxton says Shenanigans is partially responsible for allowing the attack because it negligently failed to warn him of the dangerous propensities of one of its patrons and because it failed to keep its premises safe. In addition, the bar allowed a violent person on its property and failed to provide proper security, the complaint says.

In his 10-count complaint, Buxton is seeking unspecified damages.

Eric Rhein of Belleville will be representing him.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 11-L-250.
