Edwardsville surgeon accused of malpractice

Short

A Madison County woman claims an Edwardsville surgeon permanently injured her bladder during a procedure to treat endometriosis.

Tonya Monroe filed the lawsuit April 28 in Madison County Circuit Court against Dr. Sara Cannon, St. Anthony's Health Center by the Sister of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George and Illini Medical Associates S.C.

According to the petition, Monroe was admitted to St. Anthony's Health Center in May 2009 with pelvic pain. Monroe says Dr. Cannon performed a laparoscopy where she found evidence of endometriosis and pelvic adhesions.

Despite no complaints of urinary problems, Monroe says Dr. Cannon operated on an adhesion near the patient's bladder. Monroe says the procedure caused permanent damage to her bladder.

Monroe accuses Dr. Cannon, St. Anthony's Health Center and Illini Medical Associates of medical malpractice. Her husband, Steven Monroe, is also suing for loss of consortium. They ask for more than $200,000 in damages for medical expenses, loss of income and court costs.

Attorney Keith Short is representing the Monroes. They ask for a jury trial.
