A Kansas track athlete is suing his former teammate after allegedly being hit in the eye by a hotel key card while in Troy for a meet.

Brandon Burch filed a lawsuit against Robert Schafer April 25 in Madison County Circuit Court.

According to the complaint, Burch and Schafer were members of the Kansas City Flyers Track Club and were in Troy for a track meet in July 2004. Burch, a minor at the time, says Schafer threw a hotel key card and hit him in his right eye, scratching his cornea. Burch says the injury ultimately led to an iris prolapse and a cataract.

Burch accuses Schafer of negligence and asks for more than $50,000 in damages for medical expenses, lost wages and court costs.

He is represented by attorneys J. Michael Weilmuenster and Nathaniel O. Brown of Belleville.
