Attorney sues Courtney, Clark & Associates over unpaid fees

Ripplinger

A Belleville law firm is accused of not paying one of its attorneys for work done on several cases.

Donald Hoffmann filed a lawsuit March 24 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Stephen R. Clark, Charles Courtney Jr. and Courtney, Clark & Associates P.C.

According to the petition, Hoffmann worked for Courtney & Clark on a contingent basis. Hoffmann says he was to receive one-third of the fees paid for legal services he performed.

Hoffmann alleges the law firm received approximately $375,000 for work on several cases for which he did substantial work. He says he was paid only $10,000 for his efforts. Despite multiple requests, Hoffman says the defendants have refused to pay him the difference.

Hoffmann is suing the law firm of Courtney & Clark for breach of contract and seeks the more than $123,000 he says he is owed, plus interest and court costs.

Attorney George R. Ripplinger of Belleville is representing Hoffmann. They ask for a jury trial.
