Madison County sheriff's deputy sues home owner for slip and fall on duty

A Madison County sheriff's deputy is suing the owner of a house where he allegedly slipped on a wooden ramp.

Timothy J. Hernandez filed the lawsuit against Eileen Hoppes April 1 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Hernandez says he responded to a call at a house in Collinsville in September 2009.

According to the complaint, the rental property is owned by Hoppes.

While visiting with the tenant in the Richter Hill Road home, Hernandez says he slipped on a wooden ramp hurt his right knee.

Hernandez says Hoppes was negligent for failing to maintain a safe entrance ramp and for not providing a warning about the potential dangers of the ramp. He is asking for at least $50,000 in damages for medical bills, lost income and court costs.

Hernandez is represented by attorney John T. Papa of Granite City.
