A Champaign man claims he developed cancer after working for years around products that contained benzene.
Gordon Price filed a lawsuit March 22 in Madison County Circuit Court against BP Products North America, Radiator Specialty Company and United States Steel Corp.
Price claims he was exposed to Liquid Wrench, which contained benzene, during his career as a laborer, mechanic and painter from 1970 until 2008.
Because of his exposure to the benzene, Price incurred medical costs, experienced pain and suffering and lost earnings, according to the complaint.
Price blames the defendants for causing his injuries, saying they engaged in fraud and failed to minimize the risks to Price.
In addition, BP and United States Steel allegedly failed to use ordinary care by failing to eliminate the benzene in their products and by failing to place warnings on their products, the suit states.
In his nine-count complaint, Price seeks a judgment of more than $400,000, plus punitive and exemplary damages, costs and other relief the court deems just.
Allyson M. Romani of Shadler and Associates in Houston will be representing him.
