Deckhand claims back injuries in suit against Columbia Marine

A Madison County man is asking for more than $100,000 after he was allegedly hurt while working on a boat.

Jason R. Baker filed a lawsuit against Columbia Marine Service L.L.C. March 21 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Baker says he was working as a deckhand aboard the boat Dick Tamayco, owned by Columbia Marine, in November 2009. As they were traveling the Mississippi River near East Carondelet, Baker says he pulled a wire cable to the port winch, slipped and fell. He says he seriously injured his back in the fall.

Baker accuses Columbia Marine of not providing a seaworthy vessel or a safe work environment and asks to be awarded what he is entitled under the Jones Act.

Baker is asking for at least $100,000 in damages for medical expenses, loss of income and court costs. He is represented by attorney Steven W. Selby of Alton.
