Goodwill shopper claims bench collapsed causing injuries

Evans

An O'Fallon woman is suing a Cahokia Goodwill store claiming she sustained injuries when a bench that was part of a furniture display collapsed under her.

Bernice King filed the lawsuit Nov. 3 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Mers/Illinois Goodwill Industries, Inc.

King says she was shopping in the Goodwill store at 1040 Camp Jackson Rd. in Cahokia on Sept. 30, 2009. The store had set up a furniture display with couches, chairs and benches. King says when she sat on one of the benches it collapsed under her.

King blames the store operators for failing to ensure the furniture in the display was safe and failing to warn patrons not to sit on the bench. Her complaint says the store placed an unsafe bench in the
display and failed to inspect the bench.

In her fall, King says she injured her back and shoulder, including a tear to a tendon in her left shoulder.

She claims permanent serious injuries, significant medical costs and pain and suffering.

In her complaint, King seeks more than $50,000 plus costs.

Eric W. Evans of Roth Evans will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-575.
