East St. Louis grocery store sued over customer's slip on snow and ice

A customer is asking the owners of an East St. Louis grocery store to pay more than $150,000 after he allegedly slipped and fell on snow and ice in the parking lot.

In the complaint filed Nov. 17 in Madison County Circuit Court, John Rodriguez accuses Foodland Inc., Foodland Warehouse Foods Inc. and Collinsville Road LLC of negligence.

The alleged fall happened in December 2008 in the parking lot of the Foodland on Collinsville Road in East St. Louis. Rodriguez says an earlier snowstorm had caused ice and snow to accumulate in the parking lot and sidewalks.

Rodriguez contends the store did not do enough to provide a safe way to get into the store. He says he slipped and fell in the parking lot, causing severe and permanent injuries.

Rodriguez is asking each of the three defendants to pay more than $50,000 for medical expenses, lost wages and the loss of normal activities.

Attorney Lanny Darr of Alton is representing Rodriguez.

Madison County Circuit Court case no. 10-L-1162.
