Feuding former law partners are set for a hearing as their fee disputes filed in two counties await the results of mediation ordered by Madison and St. Clair County judges.
Godfrey attorney Timothy Campbell is suing his former legal team member Paul Weiss and his Chicago law firm, Freed & Weiss, for allegedly gypping him out of fees.
Campbell and the Freed & Weiss firm were once partners with the former Lakin law firm in filing various class action suits in Madison and St. Clair counties.
The partnership fell apart three years ago.
Since then, the former partners have filed various breach of contract suits against one another seeking parts of the fees from those cases.
Campbell and Freed & Weiss have cases pending against one another in both Madison and St. Clair counties.
Madison County Circuit Judge Daniel Stack presided over the Campbell case in Madison County.
Former St. Clair County Circuit Judge Michael O'Malley had the St. Clair County suit.
In March, Stack ordered the warring parties to mediate all of their pending Madison County cases. There were at least two fee disputes pending in Edwardsville courtrooms at the time of the March 9 mediation order.
On March 30, O'Malley ordered the parties to mediate their St. Clair County claims with former judge James Radcliffe.
So far, the case file in Madison County does not indicate the status of mediation.
In the St. Clair County fee disputes, O'Malley canceled two status conferences in May and June.
The St. Clair actions are now set for status Sept. 22 at 10 a.m. O'Malley has since retired from the bench.
In St. Clair County, Campbell is represented by Terry Brown of Belleville. Campbell is represented by John Hoefert of Godfrey in the Madison County suit before Stack.
Richard Burke of St. Louis represented Freed & Weiss in their various disputes.
The case in which Stack ordered the parties to mediate is Madison case is case number 08-L-364.
The St. Clair County case is case number 09-L-205.
