City of East St. Louis sued over cop's poorly maintained squad car

Three St. Clair County residents are suing the city of East St. Louis for negligence after they were allegedly hit by a police officer driving a poorly-maintained squad car.

Delon Scruggs, Resheda Jones and Bryson Lee filed the complaint against East St. Louis Aug. 23 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

According to the suit, the alleged incident happened in April when Jones stopped her car at the intersection of St. Louis Avenue and Ninth Street in East St. Louis. As she proceeded through the intersection, Jones says a police cruiser failed to stop at the stop sign and hit her car.

Jones says the police car, driven by officer Beverly Miles, was traveling at a high rate of speed without horns or sirens when it hit her.

The lawsuit also claims the city of East St. Louis knew the police cruiser driven by Miles did not have working sirens or horn when she was assigned to the vehicle.

Scruggs and Lee were passengers in Jones' car at the time of the crash. All three were injured in the crash and are suing for medical expenses, lost wages and court costs. Jones is also asking for money to repair damage to her car.

Jones, Scruggs and Lee are each asking for $20,000 in damages. They are represented by attorney Kevin Sauter of St. Louis.
