Edwardsville tavern sued over man's attack

A Madison County man claims four patrons at an Edwardsville bar attacked him, and the man blames the bar for his injuries in a recently filed suit.

Randy Sheppard filed a lawsuit June 24 in Madison County Circuit Court against DLC Investment Inc. doing business as Phil's Tavern.

Sheppard claims Dustin Grizzle, Shawn Grizzle, Aaron Niemeyer and John Doe drank alcoholic beverages at Phil's Tavern on Oct. 27, 2007, and into the early morning hours of Oct. 28, 2007, which caused them to become intoxicated.

As a result of their intoxication, the four men attacked Randy Sheppard, kicking, biting and punching him, according to the complaint.

Because of the attack, Sheppard suffered contusions and lacerations over his entire body, human bites, torn cartilage, broken ribs, serious injury to both knees and other "heinous" injuries, the suit states. In addition, he suffered disability and disfigurement; incurred medical costs; experienced great physical pain, suffering and mental anguish; sustained an impaired enjoyment of his everyday life activities; and became hindered from his normal course of employment, the complaint says.

In his complaint, Sheppard seeks a judgment of more than $50,000, plus relief the court deems just.

S. Russell Meyer and Amy M. Meyer of Meyer Law Firm in Alton will be representing him.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-667.
