Car accident caused by Belleville cop, woman claims in suit

A woman claims a Belleville police officer caused severe and permanent injuries to her body and nervous system after she says the officer caused an accident.

Cheryl T. Greer filed a lawsuit March 11 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against James Fietsam and the city of Belleville.

Greer claims she drove east on Illinois Route 161 near its intersection with Sullivan Drive in Belleville on May 26 when Fietsam, who drove a police cruiser west on Illinois Route 161, collided with a vehicle in front of Greer, causing Greer to strike that vehicle.

Because of the accident, Greer suffered injuries to her back, neck, left leg, ankle and foot; became hindered from attending to her usual duties; suffered great pain and mental anguish; and incurred medical costs, according to the complaint.

Greer blames Fietsam for failing to keep his vehicle under control, for failing to keep a proper lookout, for failing to stop or swerve to avoid a collision and for driving too fast.

In her four-count suit, Greer seeks a judgment of more than $200,000, plus costs.

David H. Bone of Kassly, Bone, English and Hillebrand will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-114.
