Hartford named in suit by pedestrian in icy sidewalk slip

A man has filed suit against an Alton company and the village of Hartford after he says he slipped on ice while walking on a sidewalk.

Leonard Jackson claims on March 29, 2009, at about 7:30 p.m. he was walking on property adjacent to Dooling Machine Products' company at 233 E. Centre Dr. in Alton when he encountered an ice patch that caused him to slip and fall.

Because of his fall, Jackson sustained injuries to his left shoulder and wrist, suffered pain of his body and mind, incurred medical costs and lost money, according to the complaint filed March 11 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Dooling negligently failed to maintain its premises in a safe condition, failed to monitor the sidewalk to prevent unnatural accumulations of ice and snow, failed to clean ice and snow, failed to properly install rainwater drains and installed a downspout that caused ice and snow to accumulate on the sidewalk, the suit states.

The village of Hartford negligently failed to maintain and monitor the sidewalk to prevent the unnatural accumulation of snow and ice, failed to clean the snow and ice, failed to properly install rainwater drains and allowed the installation of a downspout that caused ice and snow to accumulate on the sidewalk, the complaint says.

In his two-count complaint, Jackson is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs.

Samuel A. Morrison of Mormino, Velloff, Edmonds and Snider in Alton will be representing him.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-264.
