Garbage truck rear-ends Honda, suit claims

A woman claims she sustained neck, back and shoulder injuries after a truck driver rear-ended her vehicle.

Lakisha A. Barnes filed a lawsuit Feb. 16 in Madison County Circuit Court against Brent A. Sanders and Robert "Bob" Sanders Waste Systems.

Barnes claims she drove a 2003 Honda north in the left lane of Humbert Road near its intersection with Seiler Road in Godfrey on March 17, 2008, at about 7:33 a.m. when the accident occurred.

According to the complaint, Sanders drove a 2006 International CF600 for Robert Sanders Waste Systems in the same lane and direction as Barnes when he collided with the rear of her vehicle.

In addition to her neck, back and shoulder injuries, Barnes became sick, sore, lame and disordered because of the accident; suffered a loss of earning capacity; experienced pain and suffering; incurred medical costs; and lost wages, the suit states.

She blames Sanders for causing the accident, saying he failed to reduce his speed to avoid a collision, drove too fast, failed to brake to avoid the collision and failed to keep a proper lookout for other vehicles.

In her three-count complaint, Barnes seeks a judgment of more than $150,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

Rodney D. Caffey of LakinChapman in Wood River will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 10-L-170.
