Woman claims injuries in Route 15 rear-end accident

A woman has filed suit against the driver who she claims rear-ended her and the East St. Louis woman who lent the driver her vehicle.

Carolyn S. Martin filed a lawsuit Oct. 7 in St. Clair County Circuit Court against Teneshia S. Howard and Mildred Vinson.

Martin claims she was stopped at a traffic control device and facing westbound on Illinois State Route 15 in Alorton on Oct. 14, 2007, when Howard, who was driving directly behind Martin, collided with the rear of her vehicle.

Because of the collision, Martin sustained severe and permanent injuries, suffered great pain and anguish, incurred medical costs and lost wages, according to the complaint.

Martin blames Howard for the collision because she allegedly failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to keep her vehicle under proper control, collided with Martin, failed to stop or swerve to avoid a collision and failed to see Martin.

Vinson negligently lent her car to a driver who she knew to be incompetent, the suit states.

In the two-count suit, Martin is seeking a judgment of more than $100,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

Ronald J. Foster Jr. of Schoen, Walton, Telken and Foster in East St. Louis will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-540.
