Rear-end accident on Illinois 159 is subject of suit

A man has filed suit against the driver who rear-ended him after he says the driver failed to cease driving behind him as he was stopped to make a turn.

William S. Reagan claims he was stopped in a Ford F350 series truck in the southbound lane of Illinois 159 and was waiting to turn west on West Monroe in St. Clair County when Christopher D. Hughes, who was also driving south, crashed into the rear of his vehicle.

Because of the collision, Reagan was thrown violently in the confines of his vehicle; suffered injuries to his neck, back and internal and external organs; and sustained a herniated disc, according to the complaint. In addition, he suffered great pain and mental anguish and incurred medical costs, the suit states.

Hughes negligently failed to keep a proper lookout, failed to keep his vehicle under control, followed Reagan's vehicle too closely and failed to stop or swerve to avoid hitting Reagan, the complaint says.

Reagan is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs.

Paul M. Storment Jr. of Belleville will be representing him.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-536.
