A former St. Elizabeth's Hospital employee has filed suit against the hospital, alleging she was wrongfully terminated because she filed a workers' compensation claim.

Cheryl Lynn Scharringhausen claims she was working for St. Elizabeth's on Oct. 15, 2007, when she was injured in an accident.

Although Scharringhausen does not specify how the accident occurred, she does say she requested workers' compensation.

On Oct. 17, 2007, Scharringhausen was fired, according to the complaint filed Aug. 12 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

"Cheryl Scharringhausen's discharge from her employment with St. Elizabeth's Hospital is causally related to her request for workers' compensation benefits," the suit states.

Scharringhausen is seeking a judgment of more than $50,000, plus costs and other relief the court deems just.

She will be represented by Michael J. Brunton of Brunton Law Offices in Collinsville.
