Hospital worker sues after patient attack

A woman is suing Gateway Regional Medical Center after she says it failed to provide her with security to protect her from a patient who attacked her.

Margaret King filed a lawsuit Aug. 5 in Madison County Circuit Court against Granite City Illinois Hospital Company, doing business as Gateway Regional Medical Center.

King says she was employed by Home Instead Senior Care as a sitter and was assigned to sit with Andrew George Reando, who was a patient at Gateway.

Without provocation, Reando suddenly attacked King on Dec. 8, causing injuries to her neck, back and pelvis, according to the complaint.

King also experienced pain, suffering, disability and lost wages and incurred medical expenses, the suit states.

King blames Gateway for failing to provide security to patients who were known to be a risk to others and for failing to monitor patients for medications that may be a risk to them.

King is seeking an unspecified judgment, plus costs.

Lance R. Mallon of the Mallon Law Firm in Wood River will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-811.
