Elevator fall prompts St. Clair County woman to sue Long and Public Building Commission

A woman has filed suit against the St. Clair County Public Building Commission and Long Elevator and Machine Company, alleging she was injured after the elevator on which she was riding fell.

Betty Jane M. Blaes claims she was at the St. Clair County Public Building Commission and was using its elevator on Sept. 30 when it fell.

Because of the incident, Blaes experienced serious and permanent injuries, incurred medical expenses, lost income and limited her ability to perform her job functions, according to the complaint filed April 6 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

The St. Clair County Public Building Commission and Long Elevator were negligent by failing to inspect the elevator and by failing to warn Blaes of the danger of the elevator, the suit states.

In addition, St. Clair County Public Building Commission negligently failed to take the elevator out of operation, Blaes claims.

Long Elevator failed to keep the elevator in proper repair, according to the complaint.

In the two-count complaint, Blaes is seeking a judgment in excess of $200,000, plus costs.

She is represented by James P. Stiehl of Swansea.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-173.
