Woman distracted by shoes and jewelry sues store over injuries

A St. Clair County woman has filed suit against a St. Clair Square shoe store, alleging she sustained a hip fracture after she tripped at the entrance to the store.

Khristine Randolph claims she was shopping at Somi Shoes on Oct. 7 at about 12 p.m. when she caught her foot on a wooden threshold and fell.

"The wooden threshold and the difference in floor elevation from the main mall floor to the store floor was not open and obvious and also that the Plaintiff was distracted by the displays of jewelry and shoes exhibited in the entrance of the store," the suit filed March 16 in St. Clair County states.

According to the complaint, there was a threshold at the entrance and exit of Somi Shoes that was two inches lower than the main floor of the mall. No warning sings accompanied the drop, Randolph alleges.

In addition to her fractured hip joint, Randolph sustained injuries to her hip, back, neck and internal and external organs and suffered great pain and mental anguish, according to the complaint.

She also incurred medical costs and has been unable to pursue the ordinary duties of her life, the suit states.

Randolph is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000 and less than $75,000, plus costs.

She will be represented by Paul M. Storment Jr. of Belleville.

St. Clair Circuit Court case number: 09-L-0142.
