Pedestrian claims leg injuries in East St. Louis accident

Melvin Brandon claims his legs were severely injured after Robert Hickman hit him while he was crossing the street.

Brandon was crossing the 1700 block of St. Louis Avenue in East St. Louis on Jan. 23, 2007, at about 10:15 p.m. when Hickman, who was driving a 1986 Nissan southeast on the same road, struck him, according to the complaint filed Jan. 22 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

In addition to his leg injuries, Brandon suffered pain and suffering, loss of enjoyment of life, loss of employment and he incurred medical expenses, the suit states.

Brandon claims Hickman was negligent by failing to keep a proper lookout for pedestrians, by driving too fast, by failing to reduce his speed to avoid hitting Brandon, by failing to change his course to avoid hitting Brandon and by failing to use due care to avoid colliding with Brandon.

Hickman also negligently failed to maintain his vehicle in safe and proper working condition, according to the complaint.

Brandon is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs.

William J. Vandersand of Belleville will be representing him.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-0028.
