Woman claims miscarriage in Edwardsville auto accident

An Edwardsville woman is filing suit claiming she suffered a miscarriage after a man collided with her as she was stopped at an intersection.

Lori K. Bowles was driving a 2002 Ford Escape east on East Park and had stopped for a stop sign at East Park's intersection with South Buchanon when the incident occurred on Oct. 23, 2007, at about 4:56 p.m., according to the complaint she and her husband, Dale Bowles, filed Jan. 22 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Lori K. Bowles was waiting for traffic to clear so she could turn left on South Buchanon when Fausto J. Murillo, who was driving a 1994 Toyota Corolla behind her, rear-ended her, the suit states.

In addition to the miscarriage, Lori K. Bowles claims she has suffered permanent injuries to her low back and lumbar spine, experienced great pain and physical suffering and incurred medical expenses.

She also lost large sums of money she might have gained from her job and her earning capacity has been seriously diminished, according to the complaint.

Murillo was negligent by failing to decrease his speed to avoid a collision, by failing to keep a proper lookout for other traffic and by failing to stop, swerve or slow down to avoid a collision, the Bowles claim.

Murillo also negligently drove too fast and drove in such a way that the vehicle he was driving struck the rear of Lori K. Bowles's, according to the complaint.

In the two-count suit, the Bowles are seeking a judgment in excess of $100,000, plus costs.

Gregory A. Becker and Mary E. Massa of Becker, Schroader and Chapman in Granite City will be representing them.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-0048.
