Roxana school district sued over bus accident

A Bethalto woman has filed suit against Roxana Community School District No. 1 and one of its bus drivers, alleging she was seriously injured after a collision with the bus.

Russell Stevens was driving a bus for Roxana Community School District No. 1 south on Doerr Street and trying to turn west onto East Tydeman Avenue on Jan. 17,2008, when he collided with the vehicle Monica Perkinson was driving, according to the complaint filed Jan. 16 in Madison County Circuit Court.

Because of the accident, Perkinson's neck and back were seriously bruised, contused, lacerated, cut, torn, swollen, aggravated, ruptured, mashed, wrenched, narrowed, compressed, subluxed, abraded, dislocated, sprained, strained and rendered stiff, sore and painful, the suit states.

Perkinson also claims she suffered great physical pain and her injuries are permanent and progressive.

Stevens was negligent by driving too fast, by failing to exercise ordinary care to keep a lookout ahead, by failing to give any signal of his intention to turn and by failing to yield the right-of-way in an intersection, according to the complaint.

Roxana Community School District No. 1 was negligent through Stevens' actions, the suit states.

In the two-count suit, Perkinson is seeking a judgment in excess of $100,000, plus costs.

Perkinson is represented by Steven M. Aroesty of Brown and Crouppen in St. Louis.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 09-L-0033.
