Rink sued over injuries caused by wrong way skater

Shirley Samuels has filed suit against an East St. Louis skating rink, alleging she was injured after she was knocked over by a skater.

Samuels claims she was at Skate City Dec. 9, 2007, and "was knocked down by a reckless skater that was skating in the wrong direction causing plaintiff permanent and progressive injuries to her arm and body as a whole," the suit filed Oct. 21 in St. Clair County Circuit Court states.

The rink was negligent because there were no floor guards monitoring skaters at the time Samuels was knocked over, according to the complaint.

Samuels claims the rink also failed to comply with multiple provisions of 745 ILCS, Act 72, including posting the duties of roller skaters at three locations in the rink, complying with roller skating rink safety standards, maintaining the stability and legibility of all signs, symbols and posted notices and providing at least one floor supervisor for every 200 skaters.

Samuels is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs.

Benjamiin F. Goldenhersh of Goldenhersh and Goldenhersh in Belleville will be representing her.

St. Clair County Circuit Court case number: 08-L-527.
