Clogged drain blamed for slip and fall suit against hospital

A Granite City woman has filed suit against Gateway Regional Medical Center, claiming her knee was seriously injured after she slipped on water accumulated on the hospital floor due to a clogged drain.

Tammy Carter claims she was heading toward the bathroom in the hallway of the Wolf Medical Building on June 6 when she slipped and fell on water that had accumulated on the floor, according to the suit filed Oct. 16 in Madison County Circuit Court.

As a result of the fall, Carter had severe injuries to her left knee and leg that has caused her disability and will cause her physical pain and mental anguish, the suit states.

She also claims she has lost earnings and has become responsible for medical expenses.

The hospital was negligent because it failed to properly keep the sewer drain free of debris, failed to clean the drain to prevent its clogging, permitted debris to accumulate in the drain, failed to properly place absorbent materials around the drain or in the hallway and failed to prevent water from entering the hallway, according to the suit.

Carter is seeking a judgment in excess of $75,000, plus costs.

Ronald S. Motil of Beatty & Motil in Glen Carbon will be representing her.

Madison County Circuit Court case number: 08-L-971.
