Cahokia school district sued for student's injury playing basketball

Cahokia Unit School District 187 is being sued by a mother whose son cut his arm playing basektball last year at the Wirth Parks Middle School.

Seeking in excess of $100,000 in damages, Shantina Douglas filed suit on behalf of her son Travon Watson in St. Clair County Circuit Court March 13.

She claims her son fell into a door at the back of the gym, which lacerated his right arm including tendons.

"Plantiff's arm went through glass window in the door, cuasing serious personal injuries to the Plaintiff and that said resulting injuries were directly and proximately caused by the carelessness and negligence of the Defendant," the complaint states.

Douglas claims the district is negligent for failing to maintain the school building, failing to use proper glass in the gymnasium door and exposing plaintiff to unreasonably dangerous health risks.

She is represented by Earl W. Hubbs of Brown & Crouppen in St. Louis.
