Wrongful death complaint filed against Gateway doctor

The estate of Della Seibold filed a wrongful death suit against Usman Qayyum, M.D. in Madison County Circuit Court Feb. 21, alleging the doctor deviated from the standard of care when treating Seibold.

Represented by John Hopkins of Edwardsville, Seibold's estate claims she was admitted to Gateway Regional Medical Center on Nov. 15, due to anterior chest pain.

Her estate claims that after assuming her care, Qayyum was guilty of the following wrongful acts:

  • Carelessly and negligently performing a percutaneous coronary intervention of a fairly complex lesion in an institution where there is no availability of surgical services;

  • Carelessly and negligently administering an initial dose of 12,000 units of Heparin;

  • Carelessly and negligently perforating the coronary artery resulting in tamponade; and

  • Carelessly and negligently failing to discontinue anti-coagulation and to perform an emergent bypass surgery to repair the perforated coronary artery.

    Seibold's estate claims she succumbed to her injuries on Nov. 18, 2006, after she was transferred to Christian Hospital Northeast.

    The estate claims Della's death left surviving family members who sustained pecuniary loss and damage, including loss of society and companionship and love and affection.

    Seibold's estate is seeking a judgment in excess of $50,000, plus costs of the suit.

    The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Daniel Stack.
