Bile duct cut during gallbladder surgery, woman claims

Gateway Regional Medical Center

A Granite City woman filed a medical malpractice suit against Gateway Regional Medical Center and Gustavo Vonderlancken, M.D. in Madison County Circuit Court Jan. 9, alleging they deviated from standards of care during her gallbladder surgery.

Lisa Lopez claims Vonderlancken performed a laparoscopic gallbladder surgery at Gateway on Jan. 11, 2006.

Lopez claims during her operation Vonderlancken cut her bile duct causing her to become disabled and lose the enjoyment of a normal life.

According to Lopez, the defendants negligently and carelessly failed to conduct a thorough and complete physical examination during the surgery, failed to make proper incisions in her abdomen, failed to maintain a clear visual field and failed to consult with appropriate specialists when complications developed.

Lopez claims her injuries have caused pain and suffering, lost wages and medical expenses, including a revision surgery to correct the damages.

Represented by John Papa of Callis, Papa, Hale, Szewczyk & Danzinger in Granite City, Lopez is seeking damages in excess of $100,000, plus costs of the suit.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Daniel Stack.
