Colon cancer claimed in med mal suit

Patricia J. McBride filed suit against Belleville Family Medical Associates and John J. Boeren, III, M.D. claiming a tumor in her color metastasized due to medical negligence.

Represented by Paul G. Schoen of The Rex Carr Law Firm in East St. Louis, McBride is seeking in excess of $100,000 in damages.

According to the suit filed Nov. 7 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, McBride underwent a colonoscopy on Jan. 16, 2006. She claims the defendants failed to:

  • Recognize that a broad polypoid lesion measuring three centimeters was at high risk for development of future colorectal cancer purely on the basis of size alone;

  • Obtain adequate tissue from biopsies;

  • Recommend that a repeat colonoscopy be performed;

  • Perform a polypectomy;

  • Refer her to a gastroenterologist or surgeon for evaluation;

  • Inform her of the significance of the polypoid lesion found during the colonoscopy; and

  • Recommend any follow-up treatment.

    McBride claims she was required to undergo chemotherapy and has experienced pain and suffering, incurred medical expenses and lost wages.
