Insurer for Hometown Hardware seeks compensation for fire

Federated Mutual Insurance Co. is seeking in excess of $100,000 on behalf of Hometown Hardware in Belleville from a neghboring business it believes is responsible for a destructive fire.

According to a suit filed Oct. 30 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, employees or agents of the Varsity Club, 6948 West Main St., failed to discard a cigarette that had not been put out in an area known to contain combustibles.

"That as a direct and proximate result...a fire broke out in the storage and pantry area of the Varsity Club, which subsequently spread to the neighboring building occupied by the plaintiff," the complaint states.

The fire destroyed Hometown Hardware's building and inventory, the complaint states.

Federated Mutual is represented by Beth C. Boggs and Michael J. Lach of Boggs, Boggs & Bates in St. Louis.

The incident occurred Aug. 13, 2006. Hometown Hardware is located at 6938 West Main St. in Belleville.
