Seaman injured while making bunk bed sues for $150k

A crew member for Illinois Marine Towing, Inc. is seeking in excess of $150,000 for injuries he sustained while maintaining his bed aboard a vessel.

Stacy Lanxon of Marion claims a chair he was using to make his bed, which was located on the top of a bunk, came out from underneath him causing him to fall and sustain a back injury. The incident occurred July 6, 2006.

According to the Jones Act lawsuit filed Oct. 15 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, the defendant is negligent for failing to provide proper equipment, for demading the plaintiff perform the task in a manner which was likely to cause injury and for failing to provide ladders to maintain the bed despite being requested to do so prior to the incident.

Lanxon, a leadman who was working on a vessel that was traversing the Mississippi River near St. Louis, claims he has lost wages, lost earning capacity, incurred medical expenses and has been made more susceptible to future injury.

He is represented by Ralph R. Bloodworth, III of the Womick Law Firm in Carbondale.
