Janet Bertelsman filed a wrongful death suit against Kostantinos Elias Psihramis, M.D., Belleville Urology Associates and St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville claiming their alleged negligence caused her husband to die from a massive pulmonary embolis.
Ralph Bertelsman died March 4, 2006, according to a suit filed May 14 in St. Clair County Circuit Court.
The suit claims Psihramis failed to take an appropriate history from Bertelsman following his complaints of leg pain, failed to appropriately examine Bertelsman and failed to prescribe DVT prophylaxis in an obese patient during a surgical procedure.
Janet Bertelsman claims she has been permanently deprived of her husband's love, companionship, society, support and that she has incurred medical expenses.
"Ralph Bertelsman's condition went undiagnosed and untreated, and he suffered permanent pain, mental anguish, disfigurement...," the complaint states.
Represented by Thomas Q. Keefe, Jr. of Belleville, the six-count suit seeks in excess of $450,000 in damages.
Bertelsman claims St. Elizabeth's Hospital is negligent for failing to properly communicate to physicians her husband's history of leg pain.
