Tree step maker sued for man's injuries

Michael Spann is suing the manufacturer and seller of tree steps he claims were unreasonably dangerous and defective.

According to a suit filed April 9 in Madison County Circuit Court, Spann injured his right ankle and left knee when the steps he was climbing Oct. 16, 2004, broke.

Tree steps are used by hunters.

Defendants in the suit are Gordon Johnson, doing business as Ultra Products, Ltd., and the steps' manufacturer Ameristep, Inc.

Represented by Lance R. Mallon of Wood River, Spann is seeking in excess of $200,000 in damages.

Spann claims the defendants failed to properly inspect and test the steps, failed to give proper warning of possible step failure and failed to use proper materials so the steps would not break with normal use.
