Memorial and surgeon named in med mal suit

A Belleville surgeon and Memorial Hospital are being sued over the death of patient Gerline Kuykendall on April 8, 2005.

According to a suit filed March 29 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, John Sadoff, M.D. failed to treat a hepatic laceration during the course of surgery performed on Kuykendall on March 16, 2005, at Memorial Hospital.

Lonnie Scott, Kuykendall's son, is the administrator of the estate and is seeking in excess of $300,000. Kuykendall's other surviving children include Mary Miller, Connie Robinson, Sharon Bradshaw and Sheila Schoenbeck.

Scott is represented by Patricia A. Zimmer of Ripplinger & Zimmer in Belleville.

The suit claims Sadoff failed to recognize indicators of progressive post-operative complications, failed to take appropriate action based upon those indicators and failed to perform additional surgery in a timely manner when it was indicated on March 16, 2005.

Scott claims Memorial Hospital holds itself out to the public "as a provider of competent skilled medical services and providers for the community it serves for the treatment of human disease and injury."

"Defendant owed Gerline Kuykendall the duty to treat her presenting condition using that degree of skill and care normally employed by a reasonably careful hospital under similar circumstances," the complaint states.
