Mt. Vernon dermatologist named in suit

A Mt. Vernon woman has refiled a lawsuit against a Mt. Vernon skin care specialist in St. Clair County Circuit Court.

Phyllis Borcherding claims a physician at the Skin Care Center of Southern Illinois severed two dorsal branches of the radial nerve in her right hand while in the process of surgically removing a squamous cell carcinoma on her right hand on March 20, 2001.

Borcherding originally filed suit on Feb. 10, 2003, but dismissed the complaint without prejudice on Jan. 17, 2006.

She underwent surgery to repair the damaged nerves on April 18, 2001, according to the complaint filed Jan. 16.

Represented by John S. Wallach of St. Louis, Borcherding also claims dermatologist George Nahass, M.D. negligently and improperly cauterized the severed nerve, failed to properly repair her right hand and failed to inform her of the damage.

Borcherding sustained severe and permanent injuries to the skin, nerves, muscles, ligaments and other tissues of her right hand, wrist and arm, the complaint states.

"That the plaintiff has suffered great physical and mental pain, suffering, disability and disfigurement in the past and is reasonably certain to experience further such pain...," the complaint states.

Borcherding is seeking in excess of $100,000 in damages, costs and a trial by jury.
