Caseyville and cop sued for beating

The Village of Caseyville and one of its police officers are being sued by a man who claims he was beaten after being pulled over in his vehicle on Jan. 1.

Traveling on Bunkum Road, Paul McCartney claims Officer Scott Wilkinson initiated his emergency lights and siren, at which time he turned right onto a side street and pulled over to the right hand shoulder.

"That immediately upon putting the automobile in park, Officer Wilkinson threw open the door of plaintiff's vehicle and pulled Mr. McCartney out while beating him about the head with his nightstick, blackjack or flashlight," the complaint filed Jan. 9 states.

Represented by Jarrod P. Beasley of the Kuehn Law Firm in Belleville, McCartney's four-count suit seeks in excess of $200,000 in damages. He claims he suffered a head injury and incurred medical expenses. McCartney also claims his constitutional rights were violated.

According to the complaint, the officer gave no warning and made no instructions prior to the beating.

"At no time did the plaintiff seek to elude, attack or antagonize the officer," the complaint states. "After being handcuffed, plaintiff lie bleeding from his head on the side of the road. Officer Wilkinson called an ambulance and Mr. McCartney was transported to the hospital."
