The Sand Bar and patron sued in Madison County

Dorothy Short filed suit against an Alton tavern and the driver of a vehicle who struck her in the parking lot.

According to Short, Gibbons was drinking at The Sand Bar prior to entering his vehicle on Oct. 30, 2005. Short claims she was standing on the parking lot when she noticed Gibbons backing up and attempted to get out of the way, but he struck and pinned her between two vehicles.

Short claims Gibbons drove his vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, failed to operate his vehicle at a reasonable speed, failed to decrease his speed, failed to maintain a proper lookout and backed his vehicle when such could not be done with safety.

Short claims she sustained injuries to her back and knees, suffered great pain of mind and body, mental anguish, incurred medical expenses to cure her disability and has been unable to attend to her ordinary affairs of life.

Represented by J. Robert Edmonds of Alton, Short is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, plus all costs of the suit.

The case has been assigned to Circuit Judge Nicholas Byron.
