Penney's and manager sued for coat hanger trip

The J.C. Penney store at St. Clair Square in Fairview Heights and its manager, Gregory W. Crane, are being sued by a customer who tripped over a coat hanger.

Jane A. Fountain claims the store and Crane are negligent for allowing a coat hanger to fall to the floor near a clothing rack carousel.

She also claims that numerous carousels were organized in close quarters making it impossible for her to view foreign objects on the floor.

Fountain claims the incident took place Sept. 21, 2005.

She is seeking in excess of $100,000 for severe and permanent injuries to various parts of her body, including her left leg.

Fountain is represented by Bernard Ysursa of Cook, Ysursa, Bartholomew, Brauer & Shevlin in Belleville and P.K. Johnson IV of Johnson & Johnson in Belleville.
